The adventure begins with the player characters (PCs) shipwrecked on an alien, hostile island after their vessel is destroyed by a vortex during a celestial event called the Serpent Star's Coil. Battered and without their gear, they are a Wayfinder's Key, a mysterious artifact that feels strangely warm. They are discovered by Silas Kane, a conflicted Giff who is an assistant to Magister Vorlag. The PCs are offered sanctuary at Vorlag's manor, a seemingly civilized compound that masks a sinister purpose.
Within the manor, Vorlag, a towering Loxodon with a cold demeanor, offers hospitality while subtly probing the PCs for information about their arrival and any unique magic they might possess. The players must navigate a world of unsettling sounds, odd smells, and constant surveillance, eventually leading them to investigate the manor's "Butcher's Basement". Here, they uncover Vorlag's horrific experiments, including psychological torture, vivisection, and the creation of "Beast Folk," hybrid creatures he uses for sport.
After escaping the manor with the help of Silas Kane, the PCs flee into the jungle, where they encounter a tragic village of Beast Folk—the survivors of Vorlag’s grotesque experiments. Silas's true motives are revealed as he uses the players to occupy Vorlag while he goes for help from the Admiralty. The adventure culminates in a frantic chase through the jungle, with Vorlag and his hunters in close pursuit. If the party survives, they are "rescued" by Captain Elias Vance of the Admiralty, who reveals that Vorlag was a rogue agent and hints that the PCs are now valuable assets to the Grand Admiral. This rescue presents a new problem, as the players find themselves on a metaphorical chessboard where their new allies might be as dangerous as their former enemies.
