The adventure begins in Mingo City, where the player characters are gathered at a cantina before embarking on a seemingly straightforward mission for Dr. Vincent Moore. Dr. Moore, a long-time friend of Captain Alex Veldis, has hired him to transport an academic, a dwarf miner, and two big game hunters to an archaeological dig in Frigia. This "off-the-books" trip is meant to be a simple, profitable run for Alex. However, before they can depart, they are confronted by Klytus, Ming's General and head of the Secret Service. Klytus, a master of psychological warfare, interrogates the party to uncover the true purpose of their expedition, all while his agents covertly install a tracker on their ship and a recording device in Rocky, Alex's loyal robot.
After successfully evading Klytus, the party's journey is interrupted by a Hawkmen ambush on the savannah. The Hawkmen, believing the ground dwellers are responsible for Ming's tyranny, aim to steal the ship for parts to fund their rebellion. The players must either fight or attempt to outwit the Hawkmen in a "Game of Wits" to free their ship and continue their journey to Frigia. The Hawkmen will drop the key to the ship's magnetic boot if defeated, allowing the party to finally take off.
Upon arriving in Frigia, the expedition finds a lost observatory that was uncovered by a recent mongoquake. Dr. Moore reveals that the observatory is a legendary site, rumored to have discovered a "mysterious planet" populated with people similar to those on Mongo. Their true mission is to find any evidence of this planet, its orbit, and how its inhabitants were contacted. The adventure culminates in the observatory, where players must explore the treacherous, frozen interior and confront a nesting Snow Dragon while being hunted by Klytus's soldiers. The adventure ends in one of four cliffhangers, with the information about Earth's orbit and its location either being stolen by a traitorous companion, Rocky, or a chase scenario where the party must outrun Klytus.
